Why Swaddling Your Baby Is More Than Just An Age Old Tradition

If you are a mom to be or a first time mom who is confused about swaddling her baby or not, you have come to just the right place. I just like you was very confused if swaddling was worth a shot. Let’s be honest the only reason we know about swaddling is because our mums told us that we must swaddle our baby. Why? Cause it is good for them. That isn.t really the most satisfactory answer is it? Which is exactly why I was confused until I did my own research.

I wasn’t sure if swaddling was truly beneficial or simply a tradition our parents had been following. Although it did turn out to be a tradition but its benefits were shocking. Before I get into that though let us discuss what swaddling is. Swaddling is basically wrapping your baby gently in a light, breathable blanket called a baby swaddle. Before you get into swaddling I would highly recommend doing your research and choosing the right baby swaddle.

How do you choose the right baby swaddle?

There really is no rocket science to it you simply need to choose a swaddle that is light, stretchy, breathable and made of hypoallergenic material. If a baby swaddle checks of these boxes that is the perfect swaddle for you so go ahead, buy it and start your swaddling journey.

Now let’s address the most important question.

Why should you swaddle your baby?

Swaddling has various benefits. It would be impossible for me to explain all of them but I will explain you a handful of them.

  • Comfort the first three months after your baby is born, it is in the transitional phase. It is adjusting to life outside the womb after having been inside for 10 months. Hence swaddling it makes it feel comfortable. The swaddle helps pack/bundle it up and create an environment similar to the womb, thus putting your baby at ease and making the transition easier.
  • Sound sleep  did you know that a newborn baby is not aware of his limbs! Shocking right? This also exactly why your babies flailing limbs can wake it up from its sleep by startling it. Not just that any sudden sound may also startle and wake up your baby. However a swaddled baby’s limbs are packed and it feels secure so it is less likely to wake up startled.
  • Warmth the baby’s internal homeostat takes a while to kick in which is why it is especially important to keep your baby warm for the first few weeks. A baby swaddle uk helps with just that. It makes sure the baby is nice and warm, hence protecting it from falling sick. While a blanket also serves the same purpose it isn’t of much use in the case of babies that can just kick them off.
  • Protection when swaddled a baby’s arms are wrapped in the blanket due to which the baby cannot go around scratching its face. Not like babies mean to scratch off their face, they just have very sharp nails even after they are clipped. If a baby’s arms are out and about they are sure to leave red, painful scratches all over its face. I am pretty sure that is the last thing any parent wants.
  • Safety swaddling a baby prevents it from rolling over and makes sure that it maintains its back sleeping position. Additionally it also makes sure that the sleepy, tired parents do not put the baby to sleep on its side by accident. Babies, especially in the first few months of their life must sleep on their back because it helps form the shape of their head. More importantly however if a baby sleeps on its side it is very likely to roll over and block his air passages making it impossible for the baby to breathe.

While all of this may have convinced you to go and buy a baby swaddle and swaddle up your baby, there is one very important thing you need to do before you do so. That is consult your pediatrician and make sure your baby does not have any hip issues because if it does swaddling will do more harm than good. Moreover before you rush into swaddling make sure you choose the perfect baby swaddle. At the end of the day it is your child we are talking about so try to make everything as perfect as possible.
